APPLICATION NOTE #183 PACIFIC DATA PRODUCTS 25-IN-ONE (172-CARTRIDGE) Rev. 01 XYQUEST has developed printer files for Pacific Data Products' 25-In-One (172-Font), Model #CF120 cartridge, which is designed to be used with the the HP LaserJet Series II, Series IID, and Series IIP. This application note lists the printer files, and also describes the substitution table incorporated into them. PRINTER FILES In order to take advantage of Pacific Data Products' 25-In-One (172-Font) cartridge, you must have XyWrite III Plus and the correct printer files. The printer files are: 3PACF172.PRN For the LaserJet Series II 3IID-172.PRN For the LaserJet Series IID or IIP If you need one of these files, please call Technical Services for information on how to order it. SUBSTITUTION TABLE Each printer file contains the same substitution table, called 8U-SUB. (A printed copy of this table is available on request.) The substitution table associates an ASCII character with a character in the Roman-8 (8U) character set. The ASCII character is what you see on the screen, and the Roman-8 character is what actually prints out. Whenever possible, the ASCII characters and Roman-8 characters match; however, the Roman-8 character set includes characters that are not part of the ASCII set. For example, the Roman-8 character set includes many foreign language characters that are not part of the ASCII set. The substitution table assigns an available ASCII character (one that you do not want to print) to each of these foreign language characters. Let's take a look at a specific case. The Roman-8 character set includes an uppercase U with a grave accent. This character is not an ASCII character (and therefore cannot be displayed on the screen), so we assigned ASCII character 190 to it. When you want to print the accented U, enter the ASCII representation of it. Type: Alt-Shift-190 Result: ASCII character 190 appears on the screen, but when you print your document, XyWrite substitutes the accented U character. Note #1 Non-Printing Characters. The substitution table does not associate a printable character with some ASCII values. Do not use the unassigned ASCII values in your documents; if you do, you will get unpredictable results. Note #2 More Information. For more information on using the HP LaserJet Series II, refer to Application Note #114; for more information on using the HP LaserJet IID, refer to Application Note #169; for more information on using the HP LaserJet IIP, refer to Application Note #180. Note #3 LaserJet "Classic." This font cartridge is not designed to work in the LaserJet "Classic" printer. Note #4 Pacific Data Products' 25-In-One (103-Font) Cartridge. Printer files designed for this cartridge and all LaserJet printers (including the LaserJet "Classic") are also available. Please call Technical Services for information.
