APPLICATION NOTE #145 SETTING UNDERLINE MODE ON A COLOR MONITOR Rev. 02 RELATED FILES: UNDERLN.EXE Color monitors work with graphics adapters in the computer to produce the vivid displays you see on the screen. Although there are many different types of graphics adapters, the most popular are referred to as EGA and VGA (IBM's PS/2 computer uses a VGA card). This application note describes a program that allows you to turn on underline mode if you have a color monitor and an EGA or VGA card. PROGRAM DESCRIPTION Color monitors do not automatically display an underline mode. Because many users expressed an interest in this feature, XYQUEST developed a program that allows you to turn on underlining for modes 1 and 9, which are the default XyWrite display modes for underline (MD UL) and bold underline (MD BU). This program, which is called UNDERLN.EXE, works on systems that have EGA and VGA cards, but does not work on systems that have CGA cards. UNDERLN.EXE is available on request; if you need a copy, just call or write to our Technical Support Department. PROGRAM OPERATION To use UNDERLN.EXE, copy it onto your working disk using the DOS or XyWrite COPY command. (If you have a hard disk, copy UNDERLN.EXE into the root directory.) To activate underlining, you must be at the DOS level. (You can use the XyWrite DOS command to suspend XyWrite and enter DOS.) Be sure the program is on the current disk or subdirectory and then type, at the DOS prompt: underln on Result: Display modes 1 and 9 now appear on the screen with an underline. To turn underlining off, type the following command at the DOS prompt: underln off Note #1 Automatic Startup. If you want underlining to be on every time you start up your computer, you can add the UNDERLN ON command to the AUTOEXEC.BAT file on your working disk (or in the root directory of your hard disk). Call AUTOEXEC.BAT and enter the command at the top of the file (that is, before starting the XyWrite editor). Note #2 Changing Modes. UNDERLN.EXE only affects modes 1 and 9, which are the XyWrite default values for the underline (MD UL) and bold underline (MD BU) character displays. If you assign different values to MD UL or MD BU (by entering, for example, MD UL=22 in your printer file), UNDERLN.EXE will have no effect on the screen display for those modes. You can change the colors associated with modes 1 and 9 before loading XyWrite. Refer to the documentation supplied by the graphics card manufacturer for information on how to do this. Note #3 IBM's PS/2 Computer. Some models of this computer use VGA cards, which means you can use UNDERLN.EXE to display underline mode on your monitor. However, IBM PS/2 Model 30 uses an MGCA card, which is not supported by UNDERLN.EXE.
