You would perform this procedure if you modified your hardware configuration by changing the printer or keyboard, or if you received an updated printer or keyboard file from XYQUEST. ®SZ10PT¯ ®HY0¯ INTRODUCTION To install a new printer or keyboard file, you first have to copy it onto your XyWrite working disk (or into your XyWrite directory if you have a hard disk), and then make sure that your STARTUP.INT file will automatically load it for you. The following sections give you the procedure for copying the file onto different types of systems, and then editing the STARTUP.INT file. All of the copying instructions assume that you are in DOS, not XyWrite. COPYING TO A HARD DISK SYSTEM Follow this procedure if you have a hard disk system: 1. Make sure that you are in the proper subdirectory for your XyWrite files. If you are unsure what directory you are currently in, at the DOS prompt: Type: prompt $p$g Result: The DOS prompt should change to C:\path>, where path is the name of the current directory. If you are not in the XyWrite directory, use the CD (Change Directory) command to switch to it. For example, if the name of your XyWrite directory is \XY, at the DOS prompt: Type: cd \xy Result: You are now in the \XY directory. 2. Insert the disk that contains the new file into the floppy drive. 3. Use the DOS Copy command to copy the file you want to use. For example, to copy the file 3EPSONFX.PRN, at the DOS prompt: Type: copy a:3epsonfx.prn Result: A copy of 3EPSONFX.PRN is now in the XyWrite directory on the hard disk. COPYING TO A DUAL FLOPPY DISK SYSTEM Follow this procedure if you are using a system with two floppy disk drives but no hard drive. 1. Make sure that your XyWrite working disk is in the A drive, and that it does not have a write protect tab on it. (A write protect tab covers the notch on the side of the disk.) 2. Insert the disk with the new file into the B drive. 3. Use the DOS Copy command to copy the file you want to use. For example, to copy the file DVORAK.KBD, at the A> prompt: Type: copy b:dvorak.kbd Result: A copy of DVORAK.KBD is now on your working XyWrite disk. COPYING TO A SINGLE FLOPPY DISK SYSTEM Follow this procedure if you are using a system with a single floppy disk drive and no hard disk. 1. Make sure that your working copy of XyWrite does not have a write protect tab on it (that is the tab that covers the notch on the side of the disk). 2. Put the disk with the new file in the floppy drive. 3. Use the DOS Copy command to copy the file you want to use. For example, to copy the file 3EPSONFX.PRN, at the A> prompt: Type: copy a:3epsonfx.prn b: 4. After a moment, the computer will display the message "Insert diskette for drive B: and strike any key when ready." At that point, take the disk with the file out of the floppy drive, put your XyWrite working disk into the drive, and then press any key. The computer will copy the information it read off of the first disk onto this disk. 5. If you are copying a long file, the computer may ask you to reinsert the disk containing the file (the source disk) and then your XyWrite working disk (the target disk). Follow the instructions on the screen to complete the copying process. EDITING STARTUP.INT Once you have copied the printer or keyboard file onto your working disk, you must edit the STARTUP.INT file so that it automatically loads your new file on startup. 1. Load XyWrite and call the file STARTUP.INT from your working disk. Type: F5call startup.int Result: STARTUP.INT appears on the screen. You will see in the file several lines starting with a bold BC. These letters are part of the XyWrite programming language, and represent the key F5. 2. If you are loading a new printer file, locate the line that contains the command to load your file. It has the form: BC lp filename.prn OR BC load filename.prn 3. Using the cursor keys, move to the name of the file on the line. 4. Change this name to the name of the new file. Be careful not to delete the bold BC. 5. If you are loading a new keyboard file, check to see if there is currently a command for loading a keyboard file. (Not all startup files include this command.) It has the form: BC ldkbd filename.kbd OR BC load filename.kbd 6. If you locate a load keyboard command, move the cursor to the name of the file on the line and complete step 7. Otherwise, go to step 8. 7. Change the name to the name of the new file. Go to step 10. 8. If your STARTUP.INT file does not include a load keyboard command, use the following procedure to add one. Put the cursor on the line that loads your printer file. Press: Shift-F4 (to define the line) Press: F7 (to copy the line) Press: F3 (to restore the define) 9. Being careful not to delete the bold BC, change the rest of the line so that it loads a keyboard file instead of a printer file. For example, if you want to load DVORAK.KBD, the line would look like this: BC ldkbd dvorak.kbd 10. Store STARTUP.INT. 11. Quit XyWrite. When you go back into XyWrite, watch the command line carefully. If there are no beeps, and no "Bad:" messages appear as XyWrite loads the new file, everything has gone well.
