APPLICATION NOTE 112 SPELLING DICTIONARY GENEALOGY Rev. 01 The dictionary that is the basis of the XyWrite Spelling Checker is derived from the one developed by the Xerox Computational Linguistics Group in Palo Alto, CA. The Spelling Checker dictionary is licensed by XYQUEST from Microlytics, who, in turn, license it from Xerox. The same dictionary is the source of the Microlytics SpellFinder product. The Xerox dictionary was constructed using a cross-polling technique that involved comparisons with seven spelling authorities. For each word in the dictionary, all seven sources were referenced. The acceptance criteria was a majority rule, although in almost all cases where there was any disagreement, only one source was different from the others. Since the references are predominately American in origin, the resulting dictionary is weighted toward American spelling rather than British. The seven references are: American Heritage Merriam Webster's Collegiate Merriam Webster's Unabridged, Third Edition Oxford English Random House College Random House Unabridged Webster's Ninth Edition
