APPLICATION NOTE #104: USING XYWRITE WITH MICROSOFT'S WINDOWS Rev. 01 Windows, a product of Microsoft Corporation, is an operating environment that gives DOS a graphic user-interface and some multi-tasking capability. This application note gives you the information you need to start and use XyWrite from Windows. INSTALLING XYWRITE TO RUN UNDER WINDOWS Before you can use XyWrite with Windows, you must install both programs on a hard drive. (It is not practical to run XyWrite with Windows on a two-floppy system.) To install XyWrite, put the XyWrite Word Processor disk in drive A. On drive C, create a special XyWrite directory and then change to that directory. Next, at the A> prompt: Type: editor then follow the instructions on the screen. To install Windows, put the Setup disk in drive A. At the A> prompt: Type: setup then follow the instructions on the screen. After both programs are installed on the hard disk, start Windows. At the C> prompt: Type: win Depending on your computer, Windows will take from 30 to 90 seconds to load. When Windows has loaded, you will see the MS-DOS Executive. Windows uses special system files called Program Information (PIF) files to determine how to run standard applications. A PIF file already exists for XyWrite, so all you need to do is modify it. Refer to the Microsoft Windows User's Guide for instructions on how to change to the \WINDOWS\PIF directory and start the PIFEDIT program. From PIFEDIT, open the XYWRITE.PIF file. In the PIF file, enter the name of the subdirectory that contains XyWrite and specify a minimum of 320K memory. Finally, make sure the file indicates that XyWrite writes directly to the screen. When you have finished editing the file, save it and then exit from PIFEDIT. STARTING XYWRITE FROM WINDOWS Windows treats XyWrite as an "old" application, which means that XyWrite does not understand the special features of Windows and must run "full screen." XyWrite treats Windows as if it were a memory-resident program. Keeping these things in mind, use the following procedure to get XyWrite and Windows to run smoothly. First, you must run the XYKBD.COM program from DOS. Then, start Windows. Most programs that run in the Windows environment are started by invoking their PIF files. XyWrite is no exception. To start XyWrite, change to the \WINDOWS\PIF directory and move the cursor to the XYWRITE.PIF file. If you are using the keyboard, press to activate the PIF file. If you are using a mouse, double-click with the cursor on the XYWRITE.PIF file. XyWrite will load as it normally does. SOME THINGS TO NOTE The DOS and DO commands are inoperative while XyWrite is running under Windows. This is because Windows terminates XyWrite's attempt to load COMMAND.COM. All background processing stops while XyWrite is active because Windows does not support it when a non-Windows application is running (A Windows application is a program that takes advantage of the special features of Windows.) While XyWrite is active, you cannot return to the MS-DOS Executive nor switch to other programs in the system. To return to the MS-DOS Executive, exit XyWrite by typing QUIT on the command line.
